Logan Places 1st and 2nd in Phillips County Spelling Bee

The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held on February 5 at Thunder Ridge Middle School. Ten students representing each of the three schools in Phillips County competed. Representing Logan were 4th grader Maycee Bolt, 5th graders Treyson Brackney and Conner Gottschalk, 6th grader Kylah Brumbaugh, 7th graders Gunnar Ashmore, Henry States, and Kinley VanDerVeen, and 8th graders Clay Grammon, Wyatt Green, and Hunter Vahling.

Twenty-five spellers remained after Round 1. After Round 2 only 11 spellers remained. Wyatt and Kinley were the only Logan spellers to make it out of Round 2. At the beginning of the 6th Round, Wyatt and Kinley were among four remaining spellers. The Bee went another three rounds until Wyatt spelled “agitation" and “cathedral” to take 1st place. There was then a spell-off for 2nd place. Kinley battled for seven more rounds. She spelled “centipede” and “truncate” to secure 2nd place. Congratulations to all of the Logan spellers. They represented us well! Wyatt will represent Phillips County in the Sunflower State Spelling Bee on March 22 at Kansas Wesleyan University.
