Inclement Weather
As wintertime approaches, it’s safe to assume that inclement weather will soon be upon us. In the event of snow or ice, the following procedures will be used in determining whether or not school will be held at Logan USD #326.
If at all possible, the superintendent will make a decision to call off school for the day by 6:45 a.m. This decision will be based on the National Weather Service report, what other area superintendents are doing, what selected patrons report from specific regions of the district, and personal road tests.
In some cases, the start of school may be delayed by an hour or so. The purpose behind this action would be two-fold. It will provide another hour to see how the storm materializes, and if it doesn’t, it will allow our buses to be traveling their routes in more daylight.
To hear of the school’s possible closing, patrons should tune into the following radio and/or television stations:
Radio:
• 92.5 KQMA/1490 KKAN (Phillipsburg);
• 106.7 KQNK (Norton);
• 880 AM-KRVN (Lexington)
TV:
• Channel 7 - KWCH (Hays);
• Channel 8 - KSN (McCook/Oberlin);
• Channel 11 - KOLN/KGIN (Lincoln/Grand Island);
• Channel 13 - NTV (Kearney)
If it’s obvious that the weather is going to be bad the next day, the superintendent will try to make the call early in the evening so that parents can start making arrangements for their children for the next day.
In the event that a storm moves in during the school day and school is dismissed early, the school will notify the above-listed media of our decision. If parents wish to make different arrangements for their children, they should call the school immediately. Whenever school is called off due to bad weather, there will be no extracurricular organized practices or games.
Knowing whether or not to call off school is a difficult decision and oftentimes stirs up unsolicited controversy. However, anytime parents think the weather is too bad for their children to attend school, they should keep them at home. The school will always defer to the parent’s decision in this situation.
The superintendent’s philosophy will be to err on the side of caution. School days can always be made up at the end of the year, but lives can never be replaced. Parents can be assured that their children will never intentionally be put in harm’s way.
