Students compete in Phillips County Spelling Bee
The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held at Thunder Ridge Middle School on February 2. Thirty spellers representing Logan, Phillipsburg, and Thunder Ridge competed. Representing Logan were 4th grader Kinley VanDerVeen, 5th grader Kaydee Bolt, 6th graders Hannah Brumbaugh and Jayla Traxler, 7th graders Taden Gottschalk, Emma Traxler, and Brayton Woods, and 8th graders Case Ashmore, Mollie Griffin, and Austin Leanna.
After Round 1, only 15 spellers remained, including Hannah, Kinley, Case, Brayton, and Emma. After Round 2, only Kinley and five spellers from Thunder Ridge and Phillipsburg remained in the competition. After Round 3, only one speller remained, Chloe VanDerVeen of Phillipsburg. She correctly spelled “botch” to win the Bee. There was then a spell-off between the other five spellers who made it through Round 2. These spellers competed for seven more rounds until Isaiah Michael (Phillipsburg) took 2nd place and Kinley VanDerVeen took 3rd place.
Congratulations to Kinley and all of Logan’s spellers who represented our school in an outstanding manner!
