Logan students place 2nd and 3rd in County Spelling Bee
The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held in the Logan School auditorium on February 6. Twenty-nine spellers representing Logan, Phillipsburg, and Thunder Ridge competed. Mrs. Laura Jansonius welcomed everyone and went over the rules. Mr. Mike Gower, Mr. Nathan Strasburg, and Mrs. Beth Norris were the judges. Mrs. Kristi Brown was the protest judge. Mrs. Sue Jackson was the pronouncer. Representing Logan were 4th grader Treyson Brackney, 5th grader Zoe Benton, 6th graders Helen Prewo, Henry States, and Kinley VanDerVeen, 7th graders Clay Grammon, Wyatt Green, and Weston Ruff, and 8th graders Hannah Brumbaugh and Jayla Traxler. At the beginning of Round 3, only 13 spellers remained, including Jayla, Clay, Hannah, Weston, Treyson, and Kinley. Weston was eliminated in round 3, so he tied for 9th place. At the beginning of Round 4, 8 spellers remained. Jayla and Treyson were eliminated in this round so they tied for 5th place. Four spellers began round 5. They were Kinley, Clay, and Hannah from Logan, and Cameron Hardacre from Thunder Ridge. Kinley went out in round six so she received 4th place. Hannah and Clay went out in round 7. Cameron spelled one final word and was crowned champion. Clay and Hannah then had a spell-off for 2nd and 3rd place. They went two rounds, with Hannah receiving 2nd place and Clay receiving 3rd place. Congratulations to Hannah, Clay, and all of Logan’s spellers who represented our school in an outstanding manner! Cameron will be representing Phillips County in the Sunflower State Spelling Bee on March 23.
