FFA students enjoy 2019 Ag Tour
The Logan FFA Chapter took their 2nd Biannual Ag tour this year. Mrs. Janet Gottstine and eight chapter members left for a three day adventure.
The group left on March 8, and returned on March 10. The trip started with an early morning departure and then off to Hornady in Grand Island, Nebraska. They toured the Hornady bullet manufacturing facility and got to see the process of how they make all their many kinds of bullets. The students got to look at all the amazing animals that were mounted on the wall throughout the office and entryway of the building. A highlight and favorite was the two standing grizzly bears in the office.
After the amazing tour at Hornady, and a light lunch, the group traveled to Case IH, also in Grand Island, Nebraska. The students were amazed at the machines and technology used to make the CASE IH combines at this plant. While there, they got to see the process of a combine being built from start to finish. They also got to see the New Holland hay cutter being put together as well.
After the CASE IH plant we were on the road again and headed to Leavenworth, Kansas, where we spent the night.
The next morning we woke up to massive rain, but that didn't stop the FFA students. We headed to Osborn, Missouri, where we toured the Shatto Dairy. While at the dairy we got to see the process that the milk went from the cow to the bottle. The Shatto Dairy serves a 100 mile area and have developed a special niche market. They sell all of their milk in glass bottles, and they also have flavored milks. The students and Mrs. Gottstine got to sample many different flavors of milk. The favorites were root beer, banana, cotton candy, strawberry, and chocolate.
After filling our cooler with some fun flavors of milk, we were off to Weston, Missouri, where we ate and toured Green Dirt Farms. Green Dirt Farms happens to be 1 of 100 sheep dairies in the world. While there, we got to see where they milked the sheep in the milking parlor. The tour also took us through the cheese making factory, where they make all their eight different sheep cheeses that they sell at the Green Dirt Farms Restaurant.
After the sheep dairy, and some sheep cheese tasting, we took a walking tour of downtown Weston, Missouri. We went into a old fashioned candy store that had a working soda fountain that still made shakes and sodas. This soda fountain dated back from 1884. All the students got to enjoy a fountain drink or shake before heading back to the hotel.
After a good night's rest, the group headed back home on Sunday and returned to Logan Sunday afternoon.
