Logan goes to math relays
Launch the media gallery 1 playerOn Thursday, November 9th, 2017, Fort Hays State University held its 39th annual Math Relays. There were over 737 students from class 1A-6A schools that competed in this exciting event. That’s out of a total of 56 schools in attendance! There are six 20-minute tests that the students take during the day. They include Using Number Sense, Trigonometry, Algebraic manipulations, Informal Geometry and Measurement, Applications of Algebra & Arithmetic, and Calculations with Calculators. The students can take these tests as teams of three or individually. If taken as individuals, they often compete against 60 to 80 other individuals in their
grade level.
This year, twelve students competed at the math relays. They were Sophomores Kelcee Braun, Tabita Duering, Camryn Greving, Toni Jenner, Chilli Phugdiprapai, and Harlee Voss; Juniors Matthew Kirkendall, Bodey LeRoux, and Brianna Pinkerton; Seniors Ryann Kats, Shaydin Speth, and Lane Stapleton. The students worked hard and competed well this year!
Here are some of the results: Our 12th grade team consisting of Ryann Kats, Lane Stapleton, and Shaydin Speth, tied for 4th place in “Using Number Sense” out of 28 teams. Sophomore Chilli Phugdiprapai placed 21st out of 73 students in the same event. She also placed 18th out of 76 students in “Geometry.” The same 12th grade team previously mentioned placed 14th out of 30 teams in “Algebraic Manipulations.” In the same event, our 10th grade team consisting of Kelcee Braun, Tabita Duering, and Chilli Phugdiprapai placed 7th out of 25 teams. Junior Matthew Kirkendall also placed 8th out of 86 individuals in the “Algebraic Manipulations.” Finally, Sophomore Tabita Duering placed 5th out of 65 students in “Calculations with Calculators."
Many of those not mentioned above placed in the upper fiftieth percentile of their competitors in each event, which is very good. Our students are competing against individuals and teams from 1A through 6A schools and doing exceptionally well! Overall, our school placed 8th out of twenty 1A schools attending the relays. All of our students who competed represented Logan well. They are to be commended on their performance and their behavior.
