Logan students take Phillips County Spelling Bee
The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held at the Huck Boyd Center on February 1. Thirty spellers representing Logan, Phillipsburg, and Thunder Ridge competed. Representing Logan were 4th grader Zoe Benton, 5th graders Henry States and Kinley VanDerVeen, 6th graders Clay Grammon and Wyatt Green, 7th graders Hannah Brumbaugh and Jayla Traxler, and 8th graders Cora Ashmore, Taden Gottschalk, and Emma Traxler.
At the beginning of Round 3, only 14 spellers remained, including Taden, Wyatt, Clay, Jayla, Cora, Hannah, and Henry. At the beginning of Round 4, 10 spellers remained including Taden, Wyatt, Hannah, and Henry. They all survived Round 4. At the beginning of Round 5, just six spellers remained including our four Logan students. At the beginning of Round 6, only Wyatt and Hannah remained. They continued spelling for another 18 rounds until Hannah spelled “exaggerate” and “pomposity” for the win. Wyatt finished as the runner-up. Taden and Henry were then called back onto the stage to have a spell-off with two other spellers for 3rd place. After two rounds two spellers survived including Taden. The spell-off continued for 8 more rounds until Jocelyn Leanna from Phillipsburg spelled “potential” and “vertical” to win 3rd, with Taden finishing in 4th and Henry finishing in 6th.
Congratulations to Hannah, Wyatt, and all of Logan’s spellers who represented our school in an outstanding manner! Hannah will be representing Phillips County in the Sunflower State Spelling Bee on March 25.
