Lady Trojans end season
The Logan Lady Trojans took their 10-9 season record into the sub-state tournament as the number two seed. On Thursday, March 2 nd they played their first game of the season (due to a first round bye) against the Northern Valley Huskies, who they had played three times already during the season. In the previous games the Trojan lost by 11, then won by 26 and then 15. Considering it was post-season play, all knew that the matchup would likely be close, and it certainly was! The Trojans were on the winning side of the 39-36 game. In the game, Karlee Braun led the Trojans with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Juniors, Lexi Hilburn and Ryann Kats each had 8 points and Hilburn gathered 8 rebounds.
After the semi-finals win, the Trojans were faced with the task of taking down the #1 seed (17-3) Wheatland/Grinnell Thunderhawks. The Ladies Trojans came out tight and the Thunderhawks seemingly couldn’t miss, which created a 5-19 first quarter Wheatland/Grinnell lead. With great tenacity however, the Trojans kept clawing and scratching in the second quarter and were able to head to the locker room at halftime knotted up at 24 with the game favorite. Just as a great championship game should be, the two teams continually exchanged punches for the next 16 minutes. With less than 30 seconds left in the game, the Trojans trailed 47-48. The next crucial 30 seconds were filled with high-pressure free throws for the Lady Thunderhawks, and they delivered. By a score of 47-54, the Thunderhawks defended their number one seed by defeating the Trojans and clinching their berth to the state tournament next weekend. The Lady Trojans certainly played a tremendous game and have nothing to be ashamed of. The Trojans shot 8 for 8 from the free throw line and 7/15 (47%) from 3-point land during the championship game. They were led by senior, Karlee Braun, with 15 points and rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Junior Lexi Hilburn had 10 points and 7 rebounds. The Trojans finished their 2016-17 basketball season with a 12-10 record. Next year they will be looking to fill the shoes of seniors, Karlee Braun, Alyssa DeBoer, Faith Hofaker and Tristen McClurg. Congratulations to the Lady Logan Trojans and their coaches for their accomplishments this season!
