Lady Trojans earn 5th place in WKLL tournament
In the aftermath of the blizzard of 2016, the WKLL High School basketball tournament finally got underway. The Lady Trojans found themselves in the number three hole of the bracket and pitted against the Triplains/Brewster Titans. With the postponements due to the weather, the girls quarter finals round was moved to Quinter High School on Thursday, February 4.
During this game, the Lady Trojans jumped out to an early 16-11 lead in the 1st quarter with hot shooting from Karlee Braun and Makayla Hilburn. The 2nd and 4th quarters however caused problems as the Trojans were out scored 25-12 during those periods. However, at the end of regulation, the score was knotted up at 41. Triplains/Brewster girls hit 6 three pointers on the night so it is fitting that one of those came in their first OT possession. It proved to be the difference in the game as the Lady Trojans lost 46-43. The Trojans were lead by Makayla Hilburn with 14 and Braun with 11. Christen Greving dominated the boards with 14.
After the loss, the girls traveled to Colby on Friday afternoon to battle the Cheylin Cougars. This ended with a much better outcome for the Trojans as they defeated the Cougars 49-37. The Lady Trojans seemed to control the game throughout the afternoon as they out scored their opponent during each quarter. Setting the pace for the Trojans was Makayla Hilburn with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Braun finished with 11 points and Greving had 8 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.
The turnaround time for the final day of the WKLL Tournament was very short for the girls. At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday the 6th, the girls faced the Weskan Coyotes in their 3rd game in 3 days. Fatigue seemed to have an affect on both teams, as the pace was slow and scoring output was low. Logan hung in there and battled to the end to earn the 27-22 victory and 5th place in the WKLL Basketball Tournament. The Lady Trojans were led by seniors MaKayla Hilburn and Christen Greving both with 9 points.
