5th graders compete in KidWind Competition in Oakley

On March 3, Logan USD 326 sent 3 teams of 5th graders to the KidWind Challenge in Oakley, Kansas.  One of the groups, Wind Seekers, consisting of Addisyn Ellenberger, Keegan Breese, Clay Grammon and Hunter Vahling placed 3rd in the 4-8 grade level.  Other groups participating were the Wind Runners: Jeffery Bliss, Kaydee Bolt, Wyatt Green, Brecken Shellito and John Sparks and the Wind Ghosts: Coda Ashmore, Adaline Elliot, Weston Ruff and Jayce Wiltfong.

The KidWind Challenge consists of 4 parts.  The first is making a wind turbine before the competition to be placed into the KidWind wind tunnel.  The wind tunnel is a 10-minute time period in which energy produced from the fan is measured in a 60 second time frame.  A team can get multiple runs during this time period trying to produce the best run possible to be scored.  A second part is presenting the wind turbine and the process from beginning to end to a panel of judges.  The other two parts consist of a knowledge quiz and an instant challenge which changes every year.

The 5th graders worked on their wind turbine during Lynette Ehm’s Science class for the month of February to prepare for the challenge.  The Ag Entrepreneur class lead by Janet Gottstine and Shannon Kats’s computer science class helped to prepare for the Challenge.
