Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!  I am looking forward to a great year of making music in the band & choir programs!

Attached are information pages about expectations and a schedule for the year.  Please inform us well in advance if a student will be missing a performance of any kind.  This helps us plan when distributing parts for concerts.

Students-please look at the calendar of events and do your best to make arrangements with your work schedule in order to be there and be on time.

Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns. Most importantly, I hope to see you at your child’s performances!

Musically Yours,

Paul Prewo

Performance Etiquette

Marching/Pep Band Members (7th-12th grades):  Students have signed up to purchase a t-shirt. These will be worn at all the home football games, State Fair, Homecoming parade, and basketball games.  (Please wear tennis shoes during football season.)

Concert Attire: Performers should be dressed appropriately any time the Stockton bands appear in public. Guidelines for concert appearance are as follows:

  • Gentlemen should wear dress slacks, khakis, shirts with collars, nice socks and shoes. Ties are certainly appropriate.

  • Ladies should wear nice dresses or skirts that go below knee length when seated, or dress slacks, and dress tops.

  • Jeans, shorts, and t-shirts are not considered appropriate concert apparel.

***Dress attire may change depending on specific concert/event attending.  Further notice will be given to students.***

Concert Behavior and Expectations: We consider that all of our performances begin the moment that you arrive at the site of the performance, whether at Logan or in another facility. Students will be expected to be on their best behavior at any performance activity. Consequences will follow inappropriate behavior.

Instrument Information

Woodwind players should have at least 2 good reeds of the proper strength at all times in case one wears out or needs to be replaced. Reeds need to be kept in a reed-guard and rotated on a daily basis. Cleaning supplies and swabs are also suggested to keep the instruments in top playing condition.

Brass players will need items such as valve oil & slide cream.

Instrument Labels/Storage

Many of our students have similar instruments and cases. Occasionally a student will take the wrong instrument home by mistake. In order to avoid this confusion, students are strongly encouraged to mark their instruments clearly with a tag or label. Percussionists should label sticks. Logan Schools will not be responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen instruments.

Assessments

Weekly Practice Sheets (if necessary Grades: 5 & 6)

Weekly practice sheets will provide me with the amount of time each week the student practices.  Class time as an ensemble is very minimal and therefore daily practice is a necessity for the student to become more successful on their instrument.  Practice material may include scales, concert music, lesson materials, and sight-reading materials.

Playing Tests (if necessary) Quizzes/Tests

Playing tests will show us how well the student is progressing on their instrument or voice.  The student will need to practice in order to become more proficient.

Daily Work/Rehearsal Participation

The large part of the students’ grades will be based on daily work and rehearsal participation.  In class activities will also count as part of their grade. This includes preparedness, attitude, behavior, effort and cooperation.  It is necessary for the student to actively participate during class to make the ensemble the best it can be!

Concert Performance/Attendance

Performances are the highlight of what the students have been working on during class and reflect a large part of their grade. Students need to be on time, dress properly, and behave appropriately. Please contact Mrs. Riener or Mrs. Jameson in advance if the student is unable to make it to the concert/performance for any reason, or as soon as possible if the student becomes ill or there is a family emergency.
