Working...
Take-Home Folders
Each student will have a folder that is to go home everyday. The folder will then need to be brought back to school each day. Because the students are responsible for taking the folders home each day and bringing them back the next morning, this promotes a sense of responsibility. Each student will earn a sticker on his/her sticker chart for each day the planner and homework come back to school. When the sticker chart is full, five tickets will be given.
Take-Home Planners
Each student will have a planner that will go home everyday. This is meant to be a communication tool between parents, students, and teacher. In it will be a short note detailing any homework or special activities coming up. Your child will also be able to write his/her spelling words in the place provided. Please feel free to write back any concerns, questions, or information that you would like to share about your child. I will be checking the planners first thing every morning.
Accelerated Reading
Second Grade is when the students become very involved with AR. It is a program where the students read a book and then take a test over it on the computer. It allows each student to read at their own reading level and is an excellent way to promote comprehension. As the students have success with the computer tests, they accumulate points and increase the level of books they are able to read. The first nine weeks we will be learning/reacquainting ourselves with the A.R. process. Beginning the second nine weeks I will be assigning an individual reading goal for each student.
Spelling
The students will have spelling words each week. On Mondays we will take a pre-test using the words from the spelling series. Any words that the students do not know how to spell will be placed on their spelling list. Their lists will also be supplemented with words from daily work, holiday words, and other words of their choosing that are appropriate for the student. Each child will have his /her own individualized list each week.
Library Books
Your child will be allowed to check out books from school. They may be able to do so as long as they have returned the books before. I am asking that they check out no more than two at a time. If you would like your child to check out more, please ask and we can make arrangements at that time.
Bal-A-Vis-X
Every morning I will lead the students in a Bal-A-Vis-X exercise. Bal-A-Vis-X requires focused attention, demands cooperation, promotes self-challenge, and encourages peer teaching. The exercises are done with sand-filled bags and racquetballs. Starting our morning with Bal-A-Vis-X with help increase each student’s learning skills by helping to stay focused throughout the day.
Parent Volunteer
I am encouraging parent volunteers to participate in our classroom activities. I believe it is important to keep a close communication between parent, student, and teacher.
